If Looks Could Thrill

While the dress and the shoes play a critical role in your overall bridal look, the right makeup can make you feel like a million dollars. Here, Cloé Timperley chats to Stephanie Lin, the owner and director of Sassy Hair & Makeup, about her fool-proof makeup tips.

When it comes to choosing hair and makeup for the big day, you’ll want to pick a look that’s true to your individual style. If you haven’t yet decided what look you prefer, Melbourne Wedding & Bride has helpfully identified some of the most popular wedding makeup and hair ideas that are guaranteed to stand the test of time. From natural and dewy, to bold and dramatic, these gorgeous wedding looks are sure to turn heads for all the right reasons.

Vintage Vixen

If you’re seeking a timeless yet striking bridal look, consider channelling Old Hollywood glamour with vintage-style makeup. Comprising flawless skin, defined eyes and a luscious pout, vintage bridal makeup is perfect for red-lip lovers who want to make a statement on their big day.

“A vintage bridal look is very elegant, and it will stand the test of time,” explains Lin. “It often consists of a classic red shade for the lips and liquid eyeliner to accentuate and define the eyes – like Audrey Hepburn. I would describe this look as not too light but not too heavy.”

Considered the height of glamour for decades, a red lip exudes sultry allure. While wearing red lipstick on your wedding day is a bold move, it’s a choice that comes with many benefits. A glossy crimson pout is an instant confidence booster, and will contrast strikingly with your all-white ensemble.

As for hair, Lin recommends a classic look that’s reminiscent of the glamorous screen stars of yesteryear. “Dita Von Teese is a great example, as she often wears her hair in soft vintage waves,” she says. “However, a simple chignon also works well with this look.”

Hopeless Romantic

Soft and luminous, romantic-style makeup has fast become one of the most popular options among brides, and for good reason! This fresh-faced, less-is-more style enhances the bride’s natural features and is ideal for women who don’t generally wear much makeup.

“This has probably been my most requested [look over] the last few years,” says Lin. “I think it’s because many brides prefer to look like the best version of themselves, [and romantic makeup] highlights their natural beauty.”

The romantic look typically incorporates subtle smoky eyes, rosy cheeks and natural-toned lips, while a dusting of shimmery highlighter along the cheekbones, brow bone and Cupid’s bow results in gorgeous, glowing skin.

“Soft bronze or gold eye shadow is often used to enhance the eyes, but mushroom or peachy tones work, too,” explains Lin. “Smoked-out brown eyeliner softens the eye, while individual or natural-looking false eyelashes create that doe-eyed look. Finish off the face with a peach or berry-toned lipstick.”

To complement your ultra-feminine bridal makeup, Lin recommends a relaxed hairdo such as waves or braids.

“The hair should have lots of texture,” she says. “Slightly teased curls or braids are great options, and you should consider weaving in some fresh flowers such as baby’s breath or roses. A flower crown also works wonders with this look.”

Bring The Drama

If you’d prefer a non-traditional makeup look, a strong eye and bold lip is ideal. Not for the fainthearted bride, this dramatic look will ensure all eyes will be on you.

“As more women become comfortable with wearing bold makeup, I find this kind of look increasing in popularity,” says Lin. “I often have brides bringing in photos of the Kardashians, and they’ll want dramatic smoked-out eyes with tonnes of brown, gold, silver and charcoal shades. The dramatic look also includes lots of contouring and bronzer, sun-kissed cheeks, highlighter and a nude lipstick to complement the drama of the eyes, as well as big lashes!”

Having already committed to the dramatic look, don’t be afraid to play with colour, as well. A bright eye can make a world of difference to an otherwise neutral bridal look while also complementing your eye colour – but subtlety is the key! An understated slick of coloured eyeliner is all it takes to elevate your bridal look from orthodox to edgy.

Your avant-garde makeup needs a hairstyle to match, and Lin suggests avoiding the conventional chignon or ponytail with this style.

“Think outside of the box,” she says. “Opt for finger waves or Victoria’s Secret curls, which you could accentuate with lots of hair extensions. You could even incorporate an eye-catching hair accessory to achieve an even more dramatic look!”

While colourful eyes, bold lips and striking hair accessories are fun and playful options, ultimately you want to feel relaxed and confident. If dramatic hair and makeup isn’t something you normally wear, it’s probably best not to start experimenting on your wedding day, so ensure you opt for a look that you’re comfortable with.

As if the mammoth task of choosing the perfect dress isn’t stressful enough, it isn’t always easy to know which direction to take with your bridal makeup. At the end of the day, Lin says the key to nailing your look is preparation and due diligence.

“At the initial consultation, I will always go over the makeup dos and don’ts,” she says. “This includes not testing any new products on the big day to avoid an allergic reaction, and making sure you follow your skincare routine. Also, I always encourage brides to do their research beforehand and look at examples on Pinterest, Instagram or Google.”

Whether you opt for understated elegance or an avant-garde style, you’ll want to settle on a look that makes you feel gorgeous and confident on the big day. After all, confidence is the most timeless beauty trend!
